2Q world news - the rest of the story
Just among our Fuel the Mission family, we reflect on the second quarter with a variety of memories and emotions: triumphs (graduations, end-of-school years), celebrations (Mother's and Father's Days, birthdays), reflections (vacations, slowing down to endure 100+ temps), difficulties (traffic accidents, trauma, loss of jobs, surgeries) and heartbreak (tragedies, funerals, medical issues). We have walked through joyful and sorrowful waters with loved ones and friends.
In the midst of what we all carry in our hearts, we as Christ-followers long to love Him well and make Him known in the midst of our days full of responsibilities and cares. This second quarter ("2Q") news is the REST OF THE STORY that is just as real as what is before you today. Your impact around the world through FTM is so significant, so God-honoring, that we must share the following stories.
ECUADOR, SOUTH AMERICA
The DUNAMIS Foundation's home for adolescent girls rescued from sex and labor trafficking is beautiful, perched on the side of a quiet pasture near Quito, Ecuador. Much progress has been made this quarter, with the finish line in sight! However, construction will soon cease until the Lord provides the $32,000 construction balance for cabinets, fixtures, plumbing, etc. We trust His timing and His provision, and praise Him for each of you who has sacrificially given towards this home.
Mary Jane McCloskey, Director of Northwest Christian School's "Thoroughly Modern Millie," invited FTM to sell jewelry designed and crafted by the DUNAMIS girls as the school's "share the stage" partner for their show. The generosity of students, parents and guests allowed us to send a check for $1910 to the Dunamis Foundation. Many girls in Ecuador were blessed as a result of this outreach, for which we are most grateful! (Pictured L to R: Janet Nevins, Mary Jane McCloskey, Julie Morelock, Edie Chudnow). Jewelry may also be purchased at their website: www.dunamisjewelry.com.
We are delighted to celebrate the addition of two girls' teams to the FUEL SPORTS ministry in Southeast Asia! This step is most significant in the midst of a culture that has been anything but supportive of girls' participation in sports. We rejoice in the hand of God moving in this part of the world to draw more and more children and youth to Him through participation in sports!
Currently, FUEL SPORTS has a total of 51 teams consisting of over 700 boys, girls, and young men and women who are coached, mentored and cared for by dedicated Christian coaches. Thank you, team sponsors, for supporting this vital work of God! Only eight of these teams still need sponsorship; simply email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
Hundreds of boys are served year-round through sports ministry, but May (the month everyone is out of school) is SUMMER CAMP month at the Canaan Camp Center. These boys represent only one group of campers who played, learned and worshiped together during camp this summer. Thank you for making this opportunity possible!
These humble and dedicated coaches gather quarterly to make plans for the FUEL SPORTS ministry and to worship together. Serving in a country that is opposed to Christianity, these men and their wives and children literally lay their lives on the altar for the cause of Christ every day. Your gifts have supported their work and have encouraged their hearts! Thank you from each of them to each of you.
We celebrate the groundbreaking of Phase 2 of the Canaan Camp Center during the past quarter! This phase (second story of the existing building) will add 8,000 sq ft for dormitories so that campers may stay overnight in comfortable accommodations. This Center is literally a haven for youth smothered by the allure of drug addiction, alcoholism, despair, and the worship of false gods.
Your generosity towards this construction project has inspired the leaders, the coaches, and the kids! They are encouraged and challenged, constantly asking us to share their gratefulness for your prayers and support.
A dollar-for-dollar matching grant on this project will double the impact of all future gifts toward Phase 2 construction. Not only is the Center currently used for meetings, day camps, sports clinics, worship services and teaching, the second story dormitories will add operational income-producing opportunities when other groups rent the facility. How we praise God for increasing our faith and giving us opportunities for such life-change for so many.
Two years ago, Lisa Nevins, Elijah Nevins and Kelley Carey posed with the kids for this photo at the Canaan Camp Center, which was under construction at the time.
To partner with our Christian brothers and sisters once again in person, we are leading A TEAM OF 10 to Southeast Asia this week! We will participate in worship, Sunday school, sports camps for boys and girls (separately), after-school tutoring, small groups, and fellowship with 19 beautiful girls (rescued from infanticide) at the Sunshine House. In addition, 1000 Bibles have been provided to give to the athletes as awards at a Sports Recognition Service while we are there. Would you commit to pray for us while we are away? Our trip dates are July 6 - 14.
Thank you for reading and viewing just a few photos that represent God's work around the world through YOU, His hands and feet. And let us remember that much more is going on than meets the eye...or our schedules...and that He is accomplishing His purposes through His own. Hallelujah! Amen.
